We went on a hike. We didn’t make it to the end. As she turned back, a hummingbird visited and we acknowledged it.

As she left to go to the tent, I stayed, preferring to sit outside with the mosquitos. I waited for the grill to cool so that it could be put away. A second hummingbird visited, one she never knew came.

There are many different interpretations of what a hummingbird symbolizes, but the first I read after driving back in silence was that it comes to let you know that it is time to let the burden of the past go.

Two hummingbirds visited that day. One for each of us.

To the other half of this story, I wish you happiness.
